Today was what we came for. Yesterday was filled with a lot of things, but not what we're here for. We are here to give, give, give. Give smiles, give hugs, give shirts, shoes and food, but more importantly, to give Jesus.
Now that the distributions have started, every day will be very similar. It will start at the warehouse, where we load up anywhere from 90-110 food boxes (see my post from March 20 for the run down on food boxes), toys and clothes for all age groups. Each day there are certain jobs you can volunteer for and today I was happy to be the photographer. We used a Fuji Instax camera, which is basically a new version of a Polaroid. I had the great pleasure of taking what will likely be the family's only family photo. I am certain that a lot of them got a good laugh as I butchered their language trying to tell them to smile, "sonrisa." Unfortunately, I remember bits and pieces from my high school Spanish classes, so while I know a few words, I know very little conjugations or how to put them into a sentence. Because the photos were like Polaroids, they didn't develop immediately, so I didn't get to see a lot of them because there was someone else running them to the end of the distribution line to present the photo to them. Regardless of sounding like a fool, I hope they enjoyed a laugh and more importantly enjoyed their photo.
In between distributions, we took our peanut butter and jelly lunch to a palm farm. Farming palm oil is a big industry in Honduras. There are hundreds of palm trees on these farms lined up evenly. It's an amazing sight.
We visited two villages today, totalling 91 families. As usual, I saw some of the sweetest faces I've laid eyes on. I even got to hold a 5 day old baby! I wanted to run out the door and straight home with him, just because he was so tiny and cute. His name was Marcello.
Keep praying, friends...for the people we encounter and for our own stamina. Today was a HOT one. By the second distribution, I think we were all questioning what we were here for. Thankfully, during our devotion time tonight, we were able to get all those feelings out and really see the beauty in this work. We serve an amazing God and he has planned every moment of this trip. I can't wait to see what's next.
Until tomorrow,
D
